While the European football season may be winding down, "sponsorship season" is only just beginning. With many contractual agreements set to an expiration date of June 30th of each year, the summer months of the calendar - in addition to being the main player transfer window - also serves as a chance for football clubs to reorganise and optimise their sponsorship portfolios.

Notably, for the 2017-18 season, clubs in the Bundesliga and the Premier League will be able to exploit and commercialise their shirt sleeve space (one sleeve only). The DFL had previously marketed this space on a collective contract on behalf of the clubs; the German logistics services company Hermes paid an annual amount estimated at €8m to display its logo on the left sleeve of the shirts of the 36 German clubs in the top two divisions. The Hermes contract ended at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season.

The Premier League has authorised the commercialisation of the shirt sleeve space - previously, the league's logo was present - for the first time. The Premier League logo will remain present one of the sleeves…
