Russia: Match TV acquires TV rights to the 2017 Confederations Cup and 2018 World Cup

"Match-TV will be broadcasting the matches of the 2018 World Cup and the 2017 Confederations Cup. The negotiations took some time, but this is a standard process," said Tasin Kandelaki, the general producer of the Russian sports TV channels group, to the Russian news agency Tass, on 02/06/2017. The deal is estimated to be a total of $36m (€32m) for the two competitions with $4.5m (€4m) for the Confederations Cup, according to the Russian media agency Sport-Express.

The two Russian public broadcasting channels Channel One and VGTRK, together with Match TV, made a joint offer to FIFA for these TV rights in April 2017, according to Russian media. No agreement was reached at the time as FIFA's demand of $120m (€106.7m) was almost four times the amount paid by these three groups for the World Cup 2014 ($32m).
