VAR: Serie A TIM to use video assistance from 2017-18, additional referees to be eliminated

"FIFA has not yet communicated the decision to us, but all the signals are clear, we will start from the beginning of the 2017-18 league season," said Carlo Tavecchio, special commisioner of the Lega Serie A, following the General Assembly held in Milan (ITA) on 10/06/2017.

Carlo Tavecchio (73 years old), president of the FIGC, was appointed the special commissioner of the Lega Serie A for a period of six months on 21/04/2017. This appointment followed the failure of the Lega Serie A to elect a president on 20/04/2017.

"As the first special commissioner of the Lega Serie A, Carlo Tavecchio asked FIFA for permission to use video assistance at the refereeing on the first day of the 2017-18 Serie A TIM season (on 20/08/2017)," the Italian federation said on 21/04/2017.

As a result of the use of video assistance, the Lega Serie A announced the removal of the additional referees in front of the technical area.
