Drone Racing: the league raises $20m, Sky plc and Liberty Media Corporation among investors

The Drone Racing League (DRL), a professional league for drone racing, has raised $20m (€17.88m) during its second round of fundraising on 12/06/2017. The British TV group Sky plc, Formula 1 owner Liberty Media Corporation, the German insurance company Allianz (title sponsor of the DRL since 08/02/2017), and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), the American professional wrestling league, were all among the list of investors.

Sky plc had previously invested $1m (€890,000) in the DRL on 14/09/2016. Sky's investment was part of a $12m (€10.7m) broader fundraising event involving the German audiovisual group ProSieben, MGM studios, the investment fundCAA Ventures, and Matthew Ballamy, the singer of the music group Muse.

In addition to this investment, Sky had a partnership with DRL which allowed it to broadcast the drone races for the 2016 season in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The six stages of the 2017 season will still be broadcast on Sky Sports Mix, the new Sky channel launched on 25/08/2016.
