Sub-Saharan Africa: Econet, SuperSport, and SABC acquire Olympic broadcast rights for 2018-2024

The South African audiovisual groups Econet Media, SuperSport, and SABC have acquired, for 43 territories in Sub-Saharan Africa (see below), the exclusive broadcast rights to the Olympic Games for the 2018-2024 period, said the IOC on 10/07/2017. These rights will cover the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang (South Korea), the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (Japan), the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing (China), and the 2024 Summer Olympics, in which the host city (Paris or Los Angeles) will be announced on 13/09/2017.

• Supersport, which markets the DStv pay-TV offering, has acquired the pay-TV broadcast rights in South Africa and in 43 territories in Sub-Saharan Africa.
• Econet Media, a subsidiary of the South African conglomerate Econet, has acquired the broadcast right (on free-to-air and pay-TV) for 43 territories in Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa).
• The public group SABC has acquired the broadcast rights (free-TV) to South Africa.
