Spain: Angel Maria Villar Llona, president of the Spanish Football Federation, arrested

Angel Maria Villar Llona, 67 years old, the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) since 29/06/1988, was arrested and placed in police custody in connection with an investigation into suspicions of embezzlement around the organisation of international matches, according the Guardia Civil (Spanish police force with military status), on 18/07/2017 (see press release below).

The son of the Spanish leader, Gorka Villar (previously director general of CONMEBOL until 18/07/2016), was also arrested, along with Juan Padron, the RFEF vice-president in charge of economic affairs, and Ramon Hernandez Baussou,, secretary of the Regional Federation of Tenerife.

Angel Maria Villar Llona was re-elected for an eighth term (2017-2020 period) to the presidency of the Spanish Federation, in Madrid (ESP), on Monday, 22/05/2017. The only candidate in the election, he earned 112 votes out of 139 voters of the General Assembly, or 80.5% of the electorate.
