Angel Maria Villar Llona, president of the Spanish federation (RFEF) since 29/06/1988, could be suspended from his post after being held in police custody on 18/07/2017 as part of an investigation for suspicion of financial malpractices in the organisation of international matches.

"The list of charges really surprises me," said José Ramon Lete, president of the Spanish High Council for Sports (CSD), on 19/07/2017. According to José Ramon Lete, who holds the rank of secretary of state, it is possible that the Court of Arbitration for Sport will initiate disciplinary proceedings against Angel Maria Villar Llona, who is also a senior vice-president of FIFA and a vice-president of UEFA: "the CSD, through its chair or a committee, will be able to request a preventive suspension, if necessary," said José Ramon Lete.
