Spain: Angel Maria Villar Llona, president of RFEF, placed in detention for financial malpractices

Angel Maria Villar Llona, president of the Spanish federation (RFEF) since 29/06/1988, has been placed in detention without bail, together with his son, Gorka Villar, said the Spanish prosecutor on 20/07/2017. The two are charged with "misappropriation of funds, breach of trust and / or fraud, forging of documents, and corruption between individuals."

Angel Maria Villar Llona, who is also a first vice-president of FIFA and a vice-president of UEFA, was detained and placed in custody on 18/07/2017, as part of an investigation for suspicion of financial malpractices in the organisation of international matches. Juan Padron, vice-president of RFEF in charge of economic affairs, was also arrested as a part of this case.

The head of Spanish football was re-elected for an eighth term (2017-2020 period) to the presidency of the RFEF in Madrid (ESP) on Monday, 22/05/2017. As the only candidate in the running, he won 80.5% of the votes at the elective general assembly of the Spanish federation.
