Spain: detained Angel Maria Villar Llona resigns from the vice presidencies of FIFA and UEFA

The Spainard Angel Maria Villar Llona has resigned as a FIFA first vice-president and vice-president of UEFA on 27/07/2017. He had been put under "precautionary and provisional suspension for a reviewable period of one year" from the RFEF presidency, which he held since 29/06/1988 - or more than 29 years - by the Consejo Superior de Deportes (Spanish High Council for Sports) on 25/07/2017, and replaced on the same day as the head of the RFEF by Juan Luis Larrea, treasurer of the RFEF.

The Spanish Federation leader was arrested on 18/07/2017 and placed in detention on 20/07/2017 in the context of an investigation concerning the suspicion of financial malpractices in the organisation of international matches. He and his son Gorka Villar, former secretary general of CONMEBOL, as well as Juan Padrón, vice president of RFEF in charge of economic affairs, have been detained for "misappropriation of funds, breach of trust and / or fraud, forging of documents, and corruption between individuals."
