ExclusiveReal Sociedad: "We aim to make our sustainability plan tangible & clear" (Iñigo Múgica)
"The most important aspect of 'Planeta Urdina' (see below) and our next step is to make these concepts tangible and clear. We aim to translate this broad vision into concrete actions and educate our club members, employees, and those connected to the club about the significance of this environmental approach, culture, and commitment. As I've mentioned before, we believe it's our responsibility, as one of the main companies in our region, to embrace this role," said Inigo Mugica

"The sustainability committee, which originates from the presidency area, is composed of three members: myself, a colleague responsible for infrastructure, and another colleague from the business area. This diverse team provides a comprehensive perspective on the organisation. Our goal from the presidency area is to involve the entire organisation in these initiatives, starting internally before extending outward."
"The Sustainability Plan 2025-2030 outlines a schedule of concrete actions in the field of sustainability that we are already implementing. For example, regarding electricity consumption in our facilities, 100% of the electricity we use now comes from renewable sources. The Sustainability Plan underlines also our commitment to reduce carbon footprint. Last year, during the 2023-24 season, our carbon footprint was 887 tonnes of CO2, and we are actively working to reduce it," added Múgica, who answered questions from News Tank Football.
"Our main partners are increasingly interested in sustainable initiatives (Iñigo Múgica)
What is the Planeta Urdina policy announced by the club in March 2025?
Planet Urdina means 'Blue Planet' in Basque. The concept embodies a broad idea, reflecting a way of doing things and a culture that emphasises the club's commitment to sustainability, sustainable development, and efficiency. We aim to take on the responsibility we believe is necessary within the framework of corporate social responsibility. This has led us to work over the past months on designing a strategic roadmap for the club's future.
A 2025-2030 sustainability plan with clear objectives »Planeta Urdina is not a concrete document; rather, it unites the core concept and main idea that we aim to focus on.
We aim to work both internally and externally to demonstrate our commitment to our people and those around the club. In terms of tangible documents and realities, we have a sustainability plan that is publicly available. This plan covers the period from 2025 to 2030, outlining our goals for the next five years.
What are the main objectives?
The plan outlines a schedule of concrete actions in the field of sustainability that we are already implementing. For example, regarding electricity consumption in our facilities, 100% of the electricity we use now comes from renewable sources. The Sustainability Plan 2025-2030 underlines also our commitment to reduce carbon footprint. Last year, during the 2023-2024 season, our carbon footprint was 887 tonnes of CO2, and we are actively working to reduce it.
We also undertake various actions throughout each season. For instance, this season we organised an event called 'BerdEguna' which means 'Green Day' in Basque. It's a sustainable match where we implement different initiatives to minimise the environmental impact. We encourage fans to use public transportation or bicycles to reach the stadium. We also calculate and compensate for emissions from team travel, using renewable electricity and other measures to promote environmental commitment.
Do you aim to involve your ecosystem in this strategy?
Yes, we are actively working on this because our colleagues in the business area have recognised that our main partners are increasingly interested in these initiatives. We strongly believe that developing the Planeta Urdina concept and implementing the actions outlined in our sustainability plan will strengthen the club, particularly in areas like business, as our partners are seeking these efforts.
How is sustainability managed within the club?
We're currently working on understanding how our staff commute »The sustainability committee, which originates from the presidency area, is composed of three members: myself, a colleague responsible for infrastructure, and another colleague from the business area. This diverse team provides a comprehensive perspective on the organisation. Our goal from the presidency area is to involve the entire organisation in these initiatives, starting internally before extending outward.
For example, we're currently working on understanding how our staff commute, whether they use public transport, and similar aspects. The natural progression for this concept is to build it from the sustainability committee within the presidency area, encouraging everyone in the organisation to participate. Ultimately, we aim to present this concept externally and demonstrate our commitment.
Is your sustainability policy measurable?
In Spain, we are required to report not only our carbon footprint but also provide a non-financial information report at the end of each season. This annual report, presented to our stakeholders, includes comprehensive details about our sustainability efforts, covering both the sustainability plan and sustainability in general.
What are the next steps for the club in these areas?
The most important aspect of Planeta Urdina and our next steps is to make these concepts tangible and clear. We aim to translate this broad vision into concrete actions and educate our club members, employees, and those connected to the club about the significance of this environmental approach, culture, and commitment. As I've mentioned before, we believe it's our responsibility, as one of the main companies in our region, to embrace this role.
Currently, our priority is to educate our internal team and effectively communicate this culture externally. We believe that we must be ambitious and move towards a more sustainable, renewable, efficient and low-emission Gipuzkoa (one of the three provinces of the autonomous community of the Basque Country).
